Founded by drummer Janosch Rathmer (Long Distance Calling) and singer/lead guitarist Nick van Delft with rhythm guitarist Stephan Gall and bass player Ruben Claro joining shortly after to complete the four-piece. Zodiac’s self-titled debut EP attracted a great deal of attention in the German music press and was selected as ‘demo of the month’ in several magazines.
Zodiac became synonymic with highly qualified blues-rock, taking inspiration from classic 70’s music giants like Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) and Stevie Ray Vaughan for their following debut album ”A Bit Of Devil” (2012) astounding the European music press.
The second album, “A Hiding Place”(2013) seamlessly sustained this trend through to the release of “Sonic Child” (2014), which saw Zodiac finally entering the German album charts, propelling the band to the throne of German blues rock and onto their first headlining Europe tour and the resulting live album “Road Tapes Vol. 1”.
By this point, Zodiac enthused many thousands at festivals including Wacken Open Air, Hellfest and Hippie-Mecca Burg Herzberg Festival. As well as on tour, hitting the road with Blues Pills, Orchid, Spiritual Beggars, The Sword, Grand Magus, Monster Truck and Audrey Horne to name just a few. Zodiac is now well primed to climb the next rung on the ladder of success.
“This album reflects who we are and what we wanna do. People will be surprised to hear what we are able to do apart from blues…” drummer Janosch Rathmer tells us about the new album ‘Grain of Soul’ and he is right. Germany’s most outstanding blues rock foursome is back with their fourth album – modified, bigger and stronger than ever.
The exciting collection ranges from straight to the point massive rock songs like the singles ‘Rebirth Of Fire’ and ‘Animal’, the gloomily atmospheric ‘Down’ and the beautiful ‘Follow You’ through to the powerful 90’s dominated title track ‘Grain Of Soul’, with it’s monumental riffing. Zodiac refuse to accept the purist thinking of the retro scene, merging classic hard rock with an exciting modern vibe and presenting themselves in a new, refreshing and extremely significant outfit. Janosch Rathmer explains: “We’ve never seen ourselves as an exclusive retro band – that comes from other people. Right from the beginning we were always influenced by the music we love and that implied music from Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath to Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Pantera and many more.
We still love the retro sound but it’s only reflecting a particular period of music history and we’re definitely more than this. That’s why we want to disengage from that and decide for a more modern rock sound without trimming our roots. It’s just a completely natural development.” Compared to “A Hiding Place” and “Sonic Child” which were highly focused on heavy blues rock, “Grain Of Soul” takes aim on musical versatility, with timeless song-writing, energetic and thrilling hooks wrapped up in a very modern and powerful sound design. After an extensive pre-production, Zodiac spent two more weeks recording at the well-known Horus Sound Studio in Hannover, collaborating with producer Arne Neurand (Guano Apes, Subway To Sally, The Intersphere, Revolverheld) to achieve the best out of each song. The drummer recalls: “Arne is a possessed producer in the best way. We were working from early mornings till late at nights but he was constantly exposed, adept and focused. It was the best decision to work with him.”
For the final mixing, they turned to the talented hands of French sound-refiner, Jean Pierre Chalbos (Grammy Award 2015, Kavinsky, Bob Sinclair) who cultivated an impressive mix at his La Source Mastering Studio. The result speaks for itself.
